Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

This soft coated breed of dogs are said to have originated in the country of Ireland. This dog is also considered as one of the oldest breed of dogs that exist even today that have originated from the country of Ireland. This dog is related to two different breed of other dogs that also took origination from the country of Ireland, that is, the Kerry blue and the Irish terrier as well. This dog was most commonly called as a poor man’s dog. This name, the poor man’s dog, was given to this dog because, this dog would work day and night in the farm or fields as herding digs that would protect the borders of the farms and they were also used as hinting dogs used for the purpose of hunting animals such as vermin and other small sized animals.

It was in the year of 1973 that this dog was officially recognised as a separate breed and proper standards were set for this dog by the very famous American kennel club. This dog has a lot of talents with in itself. Some of these talents however are as follows; hunting, herding, watch dog and they were used as a ratter as well. The dogs belonging to this terrier breed are usually having a rather compact body. This compact body of the dog is also rather squarely proportionate. The dogs of this breed have the presence of a head that is rather long in nature. This long sized head is also quite rectangular when looked at the shape of the head. This long sized and rectangular shaped head in such a way that it is perfectly proportional to body of this dog.

The muzzle of the dog is rather short when compared with the rest of the head and also when compared to the rest of the body of the dog. These rather proportionately short muzzles come to a rather defined stop. This muzzle ends to form a nose which is black in its color. This black colored nose is of a rather large size. The teeth of the dogs usually meet and form a very strong scissor bite. The dogs of this breed have a pair of lips that is black in color. The pair of eyes in the dogs of this breed set rather far apart from one another. These wide set pair of eyes is almond in shape. The color of these eyes may be different in different dogs.

However, the usually reported colors are reddish brown, a medium brownish color or any other color that falls in between these two colors. Some of the dogs may even have light colored eyes are even yellow colored eyes, although this is highly possible, it is considered to be a fault in these dogs and the dogs having these colored eyes are very undesirable. They have a pair of ears that are usually shaped in the form of a v. These V shaped ears generally tend to fall in the forward direction.
