The southern hound dogs are said to have originated in Britain. However, they are extinct now and no longer exist today. It is said that these dogs existed till somewhere around the 19th century. The exact that that this breed went extinct in nit known. As this dog is now extinct, the exact facts and theories of the origination of the dogs of this breed are not clearly known. According to the work of most writers, this dog developed from the Talbot. And the Talbot dog had a predominantly white colored coat. They were slow and had a very deep throat. These Talbot dogs were scent hounds.

The southern hound dogs are said to have been very tall dogs. This tall dog was also said to be quite heavy when it comes to the weight of the dog. They had the presence of a head that was rather square in size. This square shaped head was accompanied by a pair of rather long ears. It is said that this dog had the presence of a chest that was very deep in nature. They had a very long sized body. This long sized body of the dog was also very bony in nature. They had the presence of a very deep and an equally melodious voice.

This dog was a rather slow dog. However, they had an incredible scenting ability. It was due to this scenting ability that this dog was used for the purpose of following a trail during a hunt. This dog was also considered as the best when it came to hunting animals like hare or deer. This dog was considered bet for these animals mainly because of their lack in speed and also due to their very deliberate nature. The hare or the deer being hunted would soon get exhausted due to the relentless pursuit by the dog unlike animals like fox or rabbits that would easily escapes into the den or a burrow and be safe.

These dogs became extinct mainly because of the development of faster and more efficient fox hound dogs. This took place roughly around the 18th century. However, these southern hounds were still sometimes used along with the faster fox hounds, to help the fox hounds pick up any kind if cold trails when the pack of the few hounds would lose the scent. This dog was also used in Wales for the purpose of polecat hunts which would take days and some were also used for the purpose of hunting otter.
