SPANISH HOUND

Since the Middle Ages, this breed appears described in the work of several classical authors, but especially in the Mounting Site of King Alfonso XI. It was bred for its use in large game and also in rabbit hunting. During a few years, in the middle of the XX century, the selective and organized breeding rules were neglected, for which the breed was in danger of degenerating irreparably.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the SPANISH HOUND
This bloodhound breed has two varieties distinguished for their size and fur color. The large greyhound, stands at 51to 56 cm, weighs 25 kg and its fur has a white background with large orange or black spots, and the greyhound, or medium greyhound, stands at 49 to 52 cm and weighs 20 kg, it has a white background and large red or black spots. In both varieties, the fur is dense, short and flat on the skin, and the spots can be so big that they may almost cover the entire body. The Spanish Hound has elongated lines, an elegant and agile appearance, and a beautiful head, with front wrinkles, long muzzle and brown nose. The yes are brown and with an intelligent expression, and the ears are flexible, long, soft and thin.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the SPANISH HOUND
It is lively, cheerful and moderate. It is passionate about hunting, but it is also a good company dog due to its docility and affectionate manner. It is sociable, although not very domestic, it adapts well and is easy to train. Its temperament is affectionate, tame and of an exceptional nobility. It is loyal to death to its master, who has a gem in this tracking hound dog.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a SPANISH HOUND
Its fur hygiene doesn’t represent much work, due to its size; a regular brushing and use of a rag are enough. It needs space to move around and get plenty of exercise.

Being it a bloodhound for small game, it is not intimidated by following larger game as the bore, the wolf, an even the bear.
