Other than being used as messengers, Standard Schnauzers were also used as vermin hunters, guardians for the live stocks, guardians for the stables and also as retrievers. On the other hand, if these ears are left to grow naturally, they tend to grow in to a v shaped structure and are also generally handing down close to their heads. They have a very straight back. Their top line however, tends to slop slightly in the down ward direction, that is, from their withers to their rump. They also have a pair of very straight front legs. These legs appear straight when viewed not only from any specific direction or angle, but they always appear straight, no matter what ever direction or angle they are looked at. They have the presence of a very high set tail.
