Stephens Cur
The Stephens' stock cur, well known as Stephens Cur belongs to cur dog breed and is a scent hound. Stephens' stock curs were primitively bred by the Hugh Stephens' family in Kentucky. Stephens cur, known as "little darkies" were bred by the same family for more than a century. Stephens' stock cur soon became distinct and united kennel club identified it as a breed of cur dogs and recognized it on 1988.
Stephens' cur is a medium sized dog with long legs, that lets the dog move apace even in the rough terrain. Stephens' stock cur is brawny and nimble dog, with a broad head. The muzzle on these dogs is slightly shorter. They have high set ears and dropped. They have a straight and medium tail. The Stephens' stock cur is a hard hunter and the fastest of cur dogs. Stephens cur is intelligent and it can be trained easily for hunting and watchdog purpose. The barking ability of Stephens cur is better than any other cur dogs. Stephens cur gets along with other dogs and pets. The skull of Stephens' stock cur is broad and flat, slightly tapering towards muzzle. The cheeks on these dogs are muscular and striking. The muzzle of Stephens cur is passably broad and has a prominent under jaw. Their lips are darkly pigmented with no flew. The teeth of the Stephens’ stock cur are evenly spaced, and have a square nose. Their nostrils are well-opened with black pigments. The eyes of Stephens cur is wide open and both the corners lie in the same line. The eyes are brown in color with eye rims being black.
The neck of the Stephens' cur is arched slightly. It is of moderate length and well muscled. Their neck widens and intermingles the shoulders quite smoothly. The Stephens' stock cur has wide and long the upper arms which helps the dog in hunting. Stephens cur is excellent in hunting squirrel and raccoons. Their elbows are strong, that allows them to act freely. Their pasterns are powerful, short, flexible and straight. The ribs are well extended and well sprung into the spine. The fore legs on these dogs are well filled in between the chest. One can notice this quite well when seen through the front view of these dogs. Stephens cur has a very good stamina and are bred particularly for that purpose.
The Stephens' stock cur has a muscular and strong hindquarter. The stifles of the hind legs are well bent, with the hooks let down completely. The feet of the Stephens’ stock cur are slightly oval with moderate size and it is well arched. It has a well cushioned, large and though pads. The outer coat is smooth and short. The under coat is soft and dense. The average height of a adult Stephens Cur ranges between 15 to 24 inches, and weigh around 50 pounds. The Stephens' stock cur is black in color with some white markings on it. The gait of the Stephens cur is effortless smooth.
