Sussex Spaniel
Sussex spaniel, a friendly low compact spaniel dog, befits both experienced and inexperienced dog lovers. It appears loosely rectangular, similar to Clumber spaniel and weighs 35-45 lb. Sussex spaniel was first bred in Hastings in 1795 by Mr. Fuller for particular hunting conditions, which also crossed breeds like liver and white Norfolk spaniel. They nearly became a non extant during the World War II. Joy Freer, a breeder had eight Sussex spaniel dogs and guarded them during the World War II. The Sussex spaniel is a monolithic lengthy dog, with Hazel-eyes and liver colored nose. It has a wide broad skull and large squatted ears with marginally arched neck. It has well-developed and deep chest with short legs and bobtail of five inches. Has a slight wavy or flat coat and weather resistant under coat with feathered neck, tail, legs and feet. The coat color of Sussex spaniel is golden liver, and there have been black and sandy colored Sussex spaniels.
Sussex spaniel with enough grooming is stable and serene. Sussex spaniel works ebullience on hunt field. They adjust well to hunt and small games. Sussex spaniel have a great affection for its owner and get along with kids and cats and are delighting, loyal and gentle. Sussex spaniel needs a patent training and it captivates in terms of learning and is very speedy, provided we are engrossed to it. Sussex spaniel is a wise dog that responds well to a good training. Sussex spaniel often suffers ear infection and could be averted by regular cleaning. Sussex spaniels do suffer some minor issues such as otitis exerna, enlarged heart, heart murmur and disc syndrome. Pulmonary valve stenosis is the most common congenital heart defect in Sussex spaniels. Also Inter-vertebral disc syndrome is common defect in this breed, which could be rectified by surgery. Sussex spaniels are extreme eaters, over feeding spaniels could result in gaining weight. The Sussex spaniel’s lifespan ranges between 12-14 years.
Sussex spaniel's require at-most care. They should be brushed leastwise once in a week. Trimming of the hairs in between their pads, ears and on the bottom of the feet off times is must. Sussex spaniel requires regular exercises. Spaniel's prone to obesity with lack of exercise. Sussex spaniel enjoys swimming and walking often.
Sussex spaniel belongs to the group of gun dogs. The barking ability of Sussex spaniel is better than any other spaniels. American kennel club recognized Sussex spaniel as one of the nine original breeds in 1884. Only ten Sussex spaniels got registered in English kennel club in 1947. Kennel Club of Great Britain identified Sussex spaniel as Vulnerable Native Breed in 2004. Only 56 Sussex spaniel puppies got registered in 2008. Sussex spaniel is recognized by American Kennel Club, Continental Kennel Club, Kennel Club of Great Britain, American Canine Registry, Canadian Kennel Club, New Zealand Kennel Club, and National Kennel Club.
