Swedish Lapphund


The Sami people of Sweden developed the Swedish Lapphunds. These are one of the Spitz breed of dogs. They were mainly bred to be excellent guard dogs. These dogs are also one of Sweden’s oldest breed of dogs. They are called as Svensk Lapphund in the local Swedish language. These dogs were also used for hunting. There is enough evidence now to clearly say that these dogs were also used as pets during the Stone Age. This is due to the fossil records collected by the archaeologists and the Historians which suggest their existence during the Stone Age. This dog was also said to have a rare and unique genetics in them which were proved by advanced gene testing.

They are a very resilient breed because of the hard work they have been put through generation after generation in Scandinavia. The landscape is mostly barren here. The Swedish Lapphunds have an all-weather proof coat. This is very essential in Scandinavia, where the climate kept changing very often. The all-weather proof coat on them made their maintenance an ease. Most of the insurance companies consider the Swedish Lapphunds o be a very healthy breed of dog. The male Swedish Lapphunds stand tall at around 48 cm and the female counterparts stand tall at around 43 cm. The Swedish Lapphunds were first registered in 1893 by the S K C. (Swedish Kennel Club)

The Swedish Lapphunds are considered to be a very rare breed outside of Sweden; they are also an exclusive breed of dogs with a lot of heritage. Chances are many people haven’t even heard of these dogs. Nor do these dogs take part in any Dog shows outside the country of Sweden, they are that rare. It is said that, only 1200 of these dogs exist around this planet. These dogs are also used as rescue and search dogs in the army and at their check posts. They take part as show dogs in the Country of Sweden and have also won many shows.

The Swedish Lapphunds need basic obedient training early on in their lives. In Sweden, these dogs are tested for their temperament with mentalbeskrivning. This system gives us with a systematic list of all the pro’s and con’s of the dog’s temperament. The Swedish Lapphunds came in as a non-aggressive, playful, friendly and intrepid and a curious dog. These are very strong dogs and they can be trained very easily too. These dogs are above the small size dogs in build and are built rectangularly. The outer coat on these dogs is long and dense. It has a very shiny texture to it. All these features only mean one thing, they are very easy to maintain and groom. The most common color no these coats is pure bear brown or black. They sometimes have white markings along their feet, chest and tail. The under coat on these dogs is curled finely and very dense in texture and protects them well from the Scandinavian terrain.
