TOSA INU
Japanese in origin, the tosa was anciently a celebrated combat dog that nowadays engages in guarding and defense. It appeared as a hybrid of the shikoku-ken and occidental dogs, amongst which we can count the German pointer, the bulldog, the Great Dane or the mastiff, in selective and successive crossings to enhance the breed. It is also known as the “sumo wrestler” or “Japanese dogge”.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the TOSA INU
It has an impressive appearance, it was large, robust and its constitution is strong and compact. The minimal accepted male height is 60 cm and 55 cm females, while the minimum weight is 40 kg. The head is large and well proportioned, with a long muzzle and a large and black nose, and its ears are medium sized, raised at the base and dropping towards the middle. The eyes are small, round, and reddish chestnut colored. The fur is hard, short and dense, monochromatic red or tawny, occasionally with white spots.
The tosa inu is only recommended for those people who have some previous experience in dog care.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the TOSA INU
One of this dog’s particularities is that it doesn’t lose its temper, keeping its serene and attentive attitude at all times. It is loyal and tolerant, feeling obliged to protect the family, task it fulfills perfectly. It adapts well to any environment, but if it is required to coexist with other domestic animals, it will be necessary to breed them together since they are puppies or we would not be able to make them get along.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a TOSA INU
Only those necessary to keep the fur clean. It has to exercise frequently and be able to run freely whenever possible. It is a patient, balanced and very sociable dog, although it never forgets its protective instinct.
The tosa inu has traits that remain unchanged from generation to generation, such as courage and the fighting instinct, clearly inherited from the dogges that intervened in its genetic chain.
