WEIMAR BRACO

Currently, and since one hundred years ago, this breed is considered one of the oldest of the ones bred under a rigid purity criterion, within the group of German pointers. In the beginning of the XIX century, experienced rangers and hunters were devoted to this breeding in the Central European court of the Duque of Weimar, for this they would cross native dogs with guide dogs, until towards 1890 this criterion was modified. It was then when strict planning of the breed began, developing a pure linage and also producing a long hair variety which emerged in isolation.

PHYSICAL TRAITS of the WEIMAR BRACO
It is a medium/large sized dog, with good musculature. The males in this breed stand, from foot to cross, between 59 and 70 cm, the females between 57 and 65 cm, with a weigh of 30 to 40 kg and from 25 to 35 kg respectively. The head is very proportionate in relation to the body, with an undefined stop, long and solid muzzle and a liver red nose. The eyes are rounded, in several shades of amber, while the dog is a puppy they are very light blue. The coat in the short haired variety is abundant, hard, straight and very dense; in the long haired variety it has a silky texture. In both cases, the color is gray in several tonalities that can go from silver to mouse, going through several intensities; white spots are admitted as long as they are small.

TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the WEIMAR BRACO
It is impetuous and perseverant at work, and friendly and tolerant as a company dog. It needs its training to be performed firm and constantly, to achieve a satisfactory adaptation. It is cheerful, intelligent, and occasionally stubborn. It needs to feel completely integrated to the family, as a member, in order to be happy. Although it shows a great deal of affection to their masters, it is such an energetic dog that it is not advised for families with very young children, since it can knock them down involuntarily while playing. It adapts well to any weather, but not to living on a flat, since it needs to enjoy outdoor space every day to be able to burn out all of its energy.

This dog’s main trait is their capacity to show the prey. The Weimar braco is a decided and energic dog during the hunt, with an excellent sense of smell and a very reliable temperament, in the ground as well as in water.

EXERCISE AND CARE required for a WEIMAR BRACO
As mentioned before, it must perform a lot of exercise, and that is the only condition that requires the owner’s attention, because it doesn’t need any other special attention since it is an animal very easy to care for.
