WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL
It was developed in the west of England and, mainly, in the Welsh country. There is not a determined period that indicates its origin, despite that in many XVII century paintings a dog with identical features appears, for which it is inferred that this is a pure and ancient breed. Also known as the welsh spaniel, its main function is collecting game, but it could be a good pet as long as its hunter instinct is respected.
PHYSICAL TRAITS of the WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL
Males in this breed should be, from foot to cross, between 45 and 48 cm, the females are 2 cm shorter, and its weigh varies between 16 and 20 kg. The skull has a moderate length, the stop is pronounced, the eyes are medium sized, hazelnut colored and the ears, low implanted, have a vine leafed shaped stretched toward the tip, they droop next to the face. The fur is long, straight and silky, with some bristles that don’t hide the lines of the solid and agile body. The most common colors are white and intense reddish, both in uniform tones.
TEMPERAMENT AND ADAPTATION of the WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL
It is an excellent water dog, with all the qualities that represents, such as a remarkable sense of smell, which if it is not conditioned with training from an early age; it could turn into a lonely hunter. It doesn’t need a large space to feel happy, but it doesn’t adapt well to the city life.
EXERCISE AND CARE required for a WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL
It requires frequent brushing and every now and then, variable between 3 and 6 months, the bristle hair should be trimmed. We should pay attention to the diet and exercise, to prevent it from gaining weight, since, as almost every spaniel; it has a sweet tooth and has a certain tendency to obesity, which is harmful to its weigh besides of depriving it from its characteristic joy.
Symmetric and solid, the Welsh springer spaniel is a dog basically bred for work.
