Whippet
It was around the 19th century, more specifically, it was during the end of this century that these dogs were developed into the dogs that they are today. These dogs were the result of a crossing between other breeds of dogs such as the Greyhound breed, the Italian Greyhound breed and also with a few other dogs belonging to the terrier family. The dogs get their name from the English phrase “whip it”, which means to move in a very quick way. The dogs of this breed are most commonly known for their incredible speed in the race track. These dogs have a lot of talents and other than racing; their talents include hunting, watchdog, sighting, lure coursing and also agility as well.
The dogs of this breed have a rather medium sized body. These dogs are from the sight hound family. Then have a lot of resemblances to the greyhound breed. The dogs have a very long skull which is lean as well. Their skull is such that there is quite a wide space in between their pair of ears. This muzzle is also very long in nature. They are so long; it almost looks like the muzzles have no stop at all. They just seem to naturally and gradually taper to form the nose. This nose is either black or dark blue in color. They may also sometimes be dark brown in color. But whatever color the nose is, it’s always the darkest shade of the respective colors and hence they all look black in color. The set of teeth of the dogs of this breed usually meet to form a scissor bite. They dogs also have a pair of small sized rose ears. These ears are usually held in a backwards direction and are also folded in nature. When these dogs are in an excited state, the ears get semi pricked in nature.
The easy of the dogs of this breed are oval shaped in nature. They are also usually darkly colored. The pair of front legs of the dogs is extremely straight in nature. The feet of the dogs are very thick, they are either cat-like in nature or they may even sometimes be hare-like in nature. They have a rather long tail. These long tails of the dog usually tend to taper to such an extent that it forms a point at the tip. This tail is usually kept low and has a slight curve in the upward direction towards the end.
The dogs have a very short as well as a smooth coat. The coat colors may include black, bridle, fawn and red. The coat may be tigered with slate blue or white. The coat may be either a solid colored one or a mixed one. This dog has a rather high level of intelligence. They are very lively, docile and also sweet in nature. They are said to make a very devoted and very loyal companion. When at home, they display a very calm temperament.
